Salesforce Org Strategy

Helping organisations navigate the complex decisions around single, multi, and hybrid Salesforce architectures.

Choosing the Right Org Architecture

In Salesforce, an "org" generally refers to a Salesforce instance allowing users to access and deploy applications with diverse feature sets. In simple terms there are three standard org strategies: Single Org, Multi-Org, and Hybrid Org. As an aside, there are also specific variations of hybrid such as Hub and Spoke. All of these options have specific technical, commercial and business implications.

Salesforce org strategies often tend to just "happen" — and in the majority of cases are unplanned. Alternatively, as needs and usage patterns change over time, the strategy employed at initial deployment can become no longer fit for purpose. This can become an issue when increasing complexity drives up costs and/or the implementation becomes unwieldy.

There Is No Single Right Answer

Aequus's general position on Org Strategy is that there is no right or wrong approach — all options are equally valid and should be assessed on their merits. However, they all have different implications across three main areas: Technical, Commercial and Business. For example, a more flexible licence type or a higher level edition may involve higher cost but be ultimately more beneficial to the business, and vice versa.

The key takeaway is that there is no single "right" answer, but rather different approaches with different implications. A deep understanding of the short and long-term consequences by all parties is the best possible outcome.

🏢 Single Org

Best for: Organisations with streamlined processes and similar data across all business functions.

Benefits: Improved visibility, consolidated reporting, standardised processes, collaboration enhancement.

Challenges: Increased complexity, longer deployment cycles, limit-related issues.

🏗️ Multi-Org

Best for: Diverse business processes requiring separation, with different security models per unit.

Benefits: Unit autonomy, risk reduction, simplified security models, performance improvements.

Challenges: Duplicated functions, elevated integration costs, complexity for sign-on.

🔀 Hybrid Org

Best for: Organisations with both shared and distinct business processes requiring a blended approach.

Benefits: Flexibility to apply the right model per business unit or function.

Challenges: Governance complexity and the need for clear architecture standards.
